Coast FM sessions (in process)

These are tracks recorded for a show on Coast FM a few years ago, hosted by the inestimable Ian Semple, who has done so much to encourage local talent. And also me. ;)

Some were recorded live on the show, some were recorded live-ish (no overdubs) at home especially for the show, but not used in the end.

Most of the following are tracks recorded for the show but not used because I recklessly did a live set, and generally find the live tracks harder to listen to. But then, I don’t find even my studio and home-studio tracks all that easy to listen to, because I hear all the little wrongnesses that shouldn’t be there.

‘Marking Time’ (Freeman-Harley) is a song written in the 1970s. The words were written by Fiona Freeman: sadly, I lost contact with her decades ago.

Backup copy:

‘Southside’ (Harley) is a 8-bar-ish blues-y thing I like to think sounds a bit Broonzy-ish, if only in form.

Backup:

‘Fainter Fahey’ (Harley) is a guitar piece in a modal tuning.

Backup:

‘Marianne’ (Harley) is a very old song – very early 70s.

Backup:

‘Big Blues’ or ‘Bootup Blues’ (Harley) is another fake blues, on this occasion with slide guitar.

Backup:

‘Can’t Sleep’ (Harley), not untypically, is a song about obsession using a modal tuning.

Backup:

‘Box of Blues’ (Harley) is a slide instrumental, intended to recall the era of Hawaiian guitar, or maybe Santo and Johnny. It uses a Cmaj7 open tuning.

Backup:

‘Diane (Going Out)’ (Harley): the version on the show was actually live.

Backup:

‘The Holy Well/Song of Chivalry’ (traditional-Harley): the song is mine, but I used a tune associated with ‘The Holy Well’ as an introduction.

Backup:

This was the version of ‘Song of Chivalry’ I actually played live on the program. In this instance, using a Baby Taylor strung for Nashville tuning.

Backup:

The applause is Ian’s very best (strictly organic) canned applause.  :)

And here’s another version in Nashville tuning pre-recorded and not used on the programme.

Backup:

‘How to say goodbye’ (Harley): this is the live version.
